About McVey

McVey is an elementary school with a population of approximately 650 students in grades K-5. We are located east of the Meadowbrook Parkway, less than one hour from New York City. Our school was built in 1950 and its original name was Meadowlawn School. In 1969 it was renamed McVey Elementary School in honor of a prominent East Meadow educator, George H. McVey

Harmony Pond

Part of the "William Coddington Nature Discovery Center," Harmony Pond, and its surrounding courtyard area, is a self-sustaining ecological environment. Installed in 1995, with the help of the McVey family and the East Meadow community, Harmony Pond is available to all of McVey's classes for use as an outdoor classroom, and curriculum has been developed for this purpose. If a class is studying nature, plants, animal life cycles, the water cycle, weather, or virtually any other life or earth science extension, Harmony Pond and the Discovery Center can be used to supplement the indoor classroom.

The McVey Science Lab, with the support of the PTA, maintains the Discovery Center. We offer McVey families with students in Kindergarten through 4th grade, the opportunity to care for Harmony Pond for one week over the summer months. All instructions and materials are provided for simple science experiments and clean-up rules. Your family may visit the pond as often as you like during the week you are assigned. This is a great way to stay connected to McVey! If you think your family might be interested in caring for Harmony Pond during the summer, please stop by or contact the Science Lab.
