Barnum Bobcats January News
Our Barnum Bobcats have been immersed in a winter wonderland of fun learning opportunities before and after the holiday break!
The kindergarten teachers would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Kindergarten students had a busy December shopping at the Holiday Boutique and enjoying the Brain Challenge, both sponsored by the PTA. They attended a fabulous Winter Concert and had gingerbread decorating parties in all of the classrooms. Mrs. Bradley, East Meadow School District’s technology specialist, instructed the children on fun and educational Chromebook computer lessons. For January, the Kindergarten students are looking forward to discussing their New Year’s Resolutions and reading many books about winter, seasons, snowmen, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All of the kindergarten teachers and students would like to thank the Barnum Woods PTA again for their upcoming performances from the Phyllis Rose Dance Company and the Bright Star Assembly.
The first-grade children are making New Year’s resolutions by setting both academic and personal goals for themselves for the upcoming year. They are continuing to explore Early World and American Civilizations in ELA. The children are learning the fundamental features of civilizations, including farming, establishment of cities and government, and creations of other practices, such as writing. In math, the children are learning how to utilize a calendar, including knowledge of the days of the week and the months and seasons of the year. In addition, the children will begin to tell time to the hour and half hour using both analog and digital clocks. The children were delighted to attend the winter concerts, have fun winter celebrations, and loved shopping at the Holiday Boutique. First grade teachers and students would like to thank the BW PTA for bringing back the Hollyrock Entertainment’s “Brain Challenge” TV Game Show. The children had a blast participating. Also, they would like to thank the PTA for the Barnum Bobcat winter hats. The children were so surprised to receive such special gifts.
Second grade thanks the PTA for the opportunity to shop at the Holiday Boutique for their family and friends. Everyone also enjoyed the Brain Challenge assembly before the break. The second-grade students have been working on solving word problems with bar models in math and wrapping up their domain in CKLA with Greek Myths. They are excited for the two assemblies this month and will be creating Valentine's Day cards for Veterans.
The third grade would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year! The students enjoyed the Jared Campbell concert VERY much. He is an annual favorite! Shopping at the Holiday Boutique was a fun event as well. Our third graders loved feeling so grown-up purchasing gifts for their loved ones! The third-grade teachers would like to thank the Barnum PTA for all that they do for their students!
It’s the most wonderful time of the year according to the fourth-grade students at Barnum Woods. The fourth-grade students were so appreciative of the “Holidays Around the World” assembly, courtesy of the PTA. This assembly was a great way to kick off the winter holiday season. To further explore holidays around the world, the fourth-grade students sat down with their families to reflect upon their own special holiday family traditions. The fourth-grade classes created projects based on traditions that are an important part of their culture. Each student shared their special traditions project with their classmates during class “Tradition Time”. It was so nice to learn about the unique cultures and traditions that represent each class. What made “Tradition Time” so special to the fourth graders was this common theme: Traditions and holidays are so special because you get to spend time with family and friends.
Grade five wishes to thank the PTA for the graduation t-shirts! The fifth graders absolutely loved them! They also enjoyed the Brain Challenge assembly in December. On January 24th, grade five will be taking a field trip to the Tilles Center to see a performance of "University of Wonder and Imagination", sponsored by the Music & Art Elementary Partnership Program. In addition, an artist from the Tilles Center will be doing a pre-show and post-show visit with our fifth graders. Permission slips are due by January 17th. The Math teachers will be giving a spiral math assessment on January 16th. This assessment will be administered on the Schoology platform in preparation for middle school test-taking. In science, students have started Unit 3 - Earth Systems. In literacy, the students have started Unit 3 on Poetry. They are super excited about using their Poetry Journals. As a grade, the students have been working on developing their New Year's resolutions. Finally, the fifth graders have been bringing in their yearbook packets and are extremely excited to see the completed yearbook.
As you can see, the Barnum Bobcats are ready to take the winter by storm here at Barnum Woods!
