May News

Bees are not the only ones busy and buzzing with excitement in the month of May and June!

The kindergarten students were so excited for the plant sale and to buy beautiful flowers for their mothers. The students worked on Mother’s Day crafts, decorating their classrooms for VIP Day, and designing rocks for the Police Department.  They are finishing their earth unit and are looking forward to the upcoming ladybug unit in science. They were eager to attend the spring concert and were excited to display their artwork for the Art Show!

The first-grade classrooms are buzzing with excitement, curiosity, and the joy of learning. The children enjoyed a study of animals and their habitats!  They learned what a habitat is, specific types of habitats, and their related characteristics.  They also planted cherry tomato seeds and are closely monitoring their progress. They are learning about how seeds germinate, the parts of a plant, and healthy eating.  In addition, the children are learning about the importance of perseverance this month. They have been involved in discussions about remembering to keep on trying again and again until you get it!  After all, perseverance is the key to unlocking a growth mindset!  The children even had the pleasure of attending the spring concert!  They were delighted to listen to the orchestra, chorus, and band.  The musicians inspired the children with their talent.  The first graders were thrilled to attend the plant sale as well and eagerly made special cards and crafts to share in celebration of Mother's Day.

Second grade is finishing studying the human body and the building blocks of nutrition.  They are eager to start their domain next week on immigration.  They enjoyed their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation and learned about some of the first airplanes as well as early flights that took place on Long Island.  Second grade would also like to thank the PTA for providing us with the opportunity to buy flowers in celebration of Mother's Day.  The second graders were so excited to have all of their VIPs in for their Living Museum, and they enjoyed a wonderful week during Wellness Week!  They are looking forward to spending the rest of second grade together and participating in all of the end-of-the-year activities and festivities!

The third graders loved shopping for their moms at the PTA Mother's Day plant sale. It always results in smiles all around and is a highly anticipated event every spring!

The fourth graders worked very hard on VIP Day projects related to the history of New York.  These projects showcased the rich and diverse past and present of our iconic state.  The creative displays capture historical events, influential figures, and cultural milestones of New York. They loved unveiling all of their hard work on VIP DAY!  The fourth-grade excitement was also palpable as students dived into decimals. Who would have thought that decimals and talks of an upcoming group project centered around a food truck business would cause such excitement!  The students are connecting decimals to real-world applications like money and pricing. The upcoming project will not only reinforce their mathematical skills but will also spark entrepreneurial creativity and practical understanding of financial literacy.  Let the “Food Truck Fun” begin!

Fifth graders have been busy.  They took the science state test, and many performed in the spring concert, which was amazing.  They were busy working on their inventions for VIP Day, and they were extremely excited to share their presentations for the Invention Convention.  Grade five exit interviews with Mr. Bottari have been going well.  Mr. Bottari has been interviewing every fifth grader and will complete the interviews in mid-June.  In addition, the fifth graders created pieces of writing on Earth Day which is displayed in the fifth-grade hallway.  Grade five students will be getting a visit from Mr. Lukasik, the Director of Literacy to talk about "Summer Reading," along with our technology department to introduce the middle school Schoology platform to them.

Ms. McNamee would like to congratulate all students for their amazing performance at the Spring Concert on May 14th.  Ms. McNamee’s exact words were, “I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to teach such impressive, hardworking students. I am over the moon proud of them!”  Thank you to parents and the community for supporting their performance and our music program!

Our students have been growing all year and now they are blossoming.  Flowers, like minds, bloom when they have been nurtured, and the beauty of blooming is not only in the final result, but in the journey of growth. So, let’s celebrate all those accomplishments this year and the steps they took along the way, both big and small, that made them possible, and know that it was through this beautiful partnership between parents and educators that is the PTA that helped cultivate it.  We are all so grateful for our Barnum Woods Family.

On behalf of all the teachers and staff, a huge thank you to the PTA for all of the delicious goodies and treats throughout Teacher Appreciation Week!  The teachers could not wait to head to the faculty room to see what was in store for them.  The Barnum Woods staff was also invited to a beautiful and delicious luncheon!  It was an amazing spread, and the incredible members of our PTA turned the gym into a Hawaiian Luau, decorating it from top to bottom!  Some people just have a way of making you feel grateful and happy, and that is certainly true for the Barnum Woods PTA.  From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for acknowledging the teachers’ and staff’s hard work and for making everyone feel so special and appreciated.
