SEPTEMBER NEWS

Welcome back everyone!  We are so excited to share the exciting activities, lessons, and events happening at Barnum Woods as we begin a new school year!

The Kindergarten teachers would like to thank parents for a very successful supply drop-off day. The teachers were able to meet their adorable students before school began. During the month of September, the students worked on rules, routines, names, and getting to know one another.  They were so excited to begin the Nursery Rhymes Unit in our reading program, CKLA.  Some other September themes that all of the classes have been working on are: all about me, sharing our new friends’ names and birthdays, learning colors and numbers, how to be a good friend, how to show kindness, how to be a good listener in school, and facts about apples.  The kindergarten team is looking forward to a wonderful school year!

First grade had a wonderful start to the new school year! First-grade students have settled into their new routines with enthusiasm and bright smiles. They enjoyed engaging in fun getting-to-know-you games and activities, helping to create a warm and welcoming community within their classrooms.  The children attended a meaningful 9/11 ceremony and are becoming thoughtful bucket fillers, spreading kindness and positivity throughout our classrooms and school.  As they transition into fall, they will participate in a variety of seasonal activities that celebrate this beautiful time of the year.  First grade looks forward to an amazing year filled with learning, laughter, and plenty of first-grade adventures!

Second grade has been acclimating to a new school year. They began a study on fairytales and tall tales. They have also been reviewing place value and learning different forms for numbers. They are looking forward to the upcoming pumpkin patch sponsored by our wonderful PTA.

Third grade students are settling in and adjusting to the routines and challenges of the new school year! The teachers were thrilled to meet all of the parents and guardians at Meet the Teacher Night. Thank you so much for coming to hear important information about the year ahead.  The PTA arranged for a food truck to be available in front of the school on the evening of Meet the Teacher Night.  This gave the teachers and staff an opportunity to order a delicious dinner while waiting for Meet the Teacher Night to begin.  Everyone enjoyed this special treat and thank the PTA for arranging it.

The fourth graders are getting used to the routines of fourth grade. They are learning how to collaborate, share ideas, and support each other as they navigate new challenges. Their eagerness to learn is shining through as they adjust to the new expectations and responsibilities, creating a positive and energized classroom environment.  The fourth-grade students completed an All About Me project highlighting important aspects of themselves. They were also challenged to create two learning goals and one personal goal for themselves to conquer and achieve throughout their fourth-grade school year. In honor of Patriot Day, each fourth-grade class honed in on all of the heroes and helpers that bring light into the world when it can be dark. Each student received a small piece of paper to create messages of hope, positivity, and thanks.  Each piece was carefully taped together to create a class quilt to show that heroes never die, and it serves as a reminder to always look for the helpers and heroes in life. The students attended the Barnum Woods 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony which made our quilts more meaningful and special.

Grade five students are enjoying working with their team of teachers and are adjusting to switching classes for each subject throughout the day.  The fifth grade attended a field trip on September 26th to the Boces Outdoor Project Adventure located in Brookville, N.Y.  Students participated in activities that facilitate personal and interpersonal growth (communication, problem-solving, trust building, risk-taking and cooperation). The students will also be taking a field trip to The Tilles Center for a STOMP production on November 13th.  They will have two teaching Artist visits before the performance, with a visit to the Nassau County Art Museum to follow in December.  These programs are sponsored by the East Meadow School District Music and Art Departments.

In keeping with the music and art department, Ms. McNamee, the orchestra teacher wanted to share that the big news for orchestra is that weekly lessons for fourth and fifth grade are underway!  Fifth grade orchestra and band will have two rehearsals a week and their weekly lessons during the school day. Those rehearsals will take place every Wednesday and Friday at 8:00AM.  Fourth graders will have weekly lessons during the school day for the first part of the year.  Fourth grade orchestra's first full ensemble rehearsal will be after school on Friday, January 31, 2025.

On behalf of all the faculty, a big thank you to the wonderful Barnum Woods PTA for the delicious welcome back breakfast.  It was truly appreciated and a great way to start off the year. We certainly look forward to a wonderful year of collaboration.
