The Barnum Bobcats are grateful for so many things!
Kindergarten children are having so much fun learning about folktale stories in their CKLA reading program. For the upcoming holiday, they have been disguising turkeys with their family projects, designing holiday placemats, creating thankful turkeys, making cards for veterans and holiday cards for our police officers, and they are looking forward to their Thanksgiving feasts in class.
The first-grade children have been doing a tremendous job settling into their routines and embracing new learning experiences. In English Language Arts, they are exploring fairy tales and folktales that have been told for generations. They are reading variations of these stories from different lands and cultures. Through these tales, the students are expanding their vocabulary, strengthening their reading comprehension, and learning universal lessons. The first graders are also little mathematicians and have been working on counting, reading, and writing numbers up to twenty. Their enthusiasm for math continues to grow as they build these foundational skills.
Second grade has been studying Ancient Greece. In math, they have finished their unit on addition and have begun subtraction.
The third graders have been having a wonderful fall season. They have taken two field trips already this year! On the first field trip, they went to the Tackapausha Preserve, and their second was to the Tilles Center for an exciting performance of "Stomp".
Fourth grade has been bursting with creativity and excitement! The recent personal narrative publishing party was a heartwarming celebration of hard work and storytelling. Each student proudly shared their polished personal narratives with peers, showcasing unique memories and personal growth. The room buzzed with pride as classmates applauded one another’s efforts, making it a truly special event. In science, imagination and curiosity took center stage as students crafted mythical creatures! Combining scientific concepts with creativity, they designed fantastical beings, explaining how their creatures could adapt to different environments. The classroom became a hub of innovation as students shared their wild and wonderful ideas. Meanwhile, anticipation is building for an exciting social studies project: constructing longhouses. Students cannot wait to collaborate with classmates to recreate these essential structures from Native American history. The excitement is palpable as they discuss materials, brainstorm designs, and prepare to bring history to life through hands-on learning. This blend of creativity, collaboration, and curiosity has made fourth grade an unforgettable adventure so far!
Grade five is currently working on their gratitude writing which will be displayed on their hallway bulletin boards. Students are participating in the LITA (Learning Through the Arts) program. They enjoyed their trip to the Tilles Center for a performance of "STOMP" last week. The Tilles Center teaching artists provided a post-performance teaching session for the students as well. In continuation with the LITA program, the fifth graders will be visiting the Nassau County Museum of Art.
Mrs. Hughes, Barnum’s music teacher, is excited to share that eight singers will represent Barnum at the January 2025 All-County Music Festival. She is so proud of all of these amazing and talented singers! In music class, kindergarten, first, and second graders are working with notation to create organized musical patterns and build literacy. Third grade students are mastering hits like, “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Miss Mary Mack” on their recorders. Fourth and fifth graders are diving deep into different musical genres and literacy.
In fifth grade band, five students from the band will represent Barnum Woods in the 2025 All County Music Festival! Students in the fifth-grade band are preparing for the Winter Concert and fourth-grade band students are improving their skills on their instruments and learning some new tunes.
