The EMHS Guidance Department organized an exciting and interactive event for new students to kick off Quarter 3—a New Student Party designed to help them connect with one another in a fun, relaxed environment. The highlight of the event was a creative challenge in which students formed small groups and worked together to build the tallest freestanding tower they could, using only a limited set of materials: a single marshmallow, 20 uncooked spaghetti noodles, a roll of masking tape, and some string. This task required participants to collaborate, think critically, and manage their time effectively, all while having fun. As the groups got to work, the room was filled with laughter, teamwork, and friendly competition. The students were encouraged to think outside the box and come up with innovative strategies to support the marshmallow at the top of their towers, all within the constraints of the provided materials. The activity not only helped break the ice but also provided a valuable lesson in teamwork and problem-solving. The team with the tallest, most stable tower at the end of the challenge was rewarded with a coveted East Meadow T-shirt. Over 40 new students attended the event, making it a great success. This gathering helped foster a sense of community and gave newcomers the chance to meet peers in a low-pressure setting, setting the stage for lasting friendships and connections as they continue their journey at their new school.
