The Season of Giving

Winter is a season that means many things for many people: cuddling up with a comfy blanket and a good book, preparing to see friends and family for the holidays, and binge-watching those Netflix shows that have been forgotten during the early months of a new school year. At McVey, winter means giving to those less fortunate. Over the years, events have been created that have the sole purpose of brightening people's days-- especially their holidays. One of these annual events is "Snowing Kindness."

Snowing Kindness is the brainchild of McVey's two social workers: Mrs. Arnone and Ms. Napolitano. During this event, a holiday tree is set up in the main lobby of the school; on this tree are ornaments that have items printed on them. When someone picks an ornament-- students, staff, and families are all able to participate-- they go and purchase the item, and deliver it one of the social workers. Items range from toys to gift cards, and all donations are then given to McVey families in need. What if the ornaments on the tree run out, you ask? The social workers also print out a flyer to be brought home by every student and staff member. The spirit of giving runs rampant in our building, and this event is always a success!

One of the relatively newer "giving" events is the Posh Pets Animal Drive. Created by the student council-- which is run by Mrs. Cecco and Mrs. Cohen-- out of their sincere desire to help shelter animals during these cold winter months, the Posh Pets Animal Drive asks staff, students, and families to send in any blankets, toys, food, or other animal necessities that would benefit the animals waiting to be adopted by their forever families. As you can tell, the spirit of giving is not only extended to humans; furry friends are also the beneficiaries of the generous spirits of the McVey students, staff, and families.

As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's persistent and most urgent question is, 'what are you doing for others?'" Dr. King would definitely be proud of what the McVey community has done in response to this question.

Happy Holidays!!
