“Getting Smart” Through Science
The students of McVey continued their commendable tradition of “Getting Smart” by taking part in the STEM Expo. The STEM Expo was open to all students from grades 3 through 5. Students worked on their projects at home, so families were encouraged to get involved. Most of the scientists performed an experiment that followed the “scientific method” and presented their findings on a project display board. The main focus for these science/STEM projects is to utilize a hypothesis to guide the experiments. It is also emphasized that each experiment should isolate one variable. In lieu of a traditional STEM project, some students opted to create an original electronic game through the Coding program, Scratch
All topics were chosen by the student scientists, with approval from the STEM Expo coordinators, Ms. Mauri and Mr. Schmidt. The participants were encouraged to explore areas that interested them. The variety of topics included: Slime, a Hydraulic Lift, Surface Tension, Coding, and building a Da Vinci Bridge.
The McVey STEM Expo took place on Tuesday, May 21st at 5:30 pm in the gym. The STEM Fair was a tremendous hit with both participants and spectators. Visitors enjoyed learning scientific facts and principles from McVey’s inquisitive young experimenters.
