Reading with a Buddy is a Blast!
The sun was not shining, but that did not stop McVey students from smiling! Students at McVey enjoyed the Second Annual Buddy Reading event during ELA Day of May Madness. An event originally scheduled to be outdoors got moved inside to the gyms and cafeterias. This brought together many classes to share their love of reading!
To get ready for the event, students worked with the librarians to choose books to share with their buddies. Reading teachers organized the event by matching classroom buddies. Students were then matched by grade level with different classroom teachers. Kindergarten worked with third grade, first grade worked with fourth grade, and second grade worked with fifth. The younger students were eager to show off their ever-improving reading skills, while the older students were happy to share some of their favorite picture books.
In addition to Buddy Reading, students participated in other fun ELA based activities (e.g., playing word games and making words with shaving cream, playdough and sand). All the activities were fun while encouraging reading and language.
ELA Day took place on May 23rd with Buddy Reading taking place in the morning. ELA Day was a tremendous success; both children and teachers requested additional opportunities to come together and read.
