On Friday, January 31st, the fourth graders at McVey enjoyed an exciting science assembly filled with fascinating experiments. One memorable demonstration showed how water stayed inside a cup even when it was spun around—leaving the students in awe of gravity’s unexpected power. The assembly was a thrilling experience, sparking curiosity and wonder in the young scientists.

3…2…1… BLAST OFF! First Grade buzzed with energy of young student “astronauts,” ready to explore the “universe.” Students eagerly engaged in astronaut training, learning how to “float” in space, communicate with mission control, and race to the moon in friendly competitions. Students built rockets crafted through origami and created constellations using marshmallows, which further fueled their passion and made space feel more within reach. The excitement was evident as the students dreamed big about becoming astronauts one day, with many imagining themselves soaring through the stars, walking the moon, or even discovering new planets.
First grade put on an educational and entertaining play for the kindergarteners that brought the Inca, Maya, and Aztec civilizations to life. The performance began with the Maya, showcasing their harvest and preparation before the hurricane. After harvesting their largest crop yet, they celebrated the Festival of the Fist Star. Next, the audience was transported back in time to the Aztec civilization. The students acted out scenes reenacting the traditions and culture of the Aztecs. Finally, the Inca took the spotlight. Students demonstrated the incredible journey to Machu Picchu with archaeologists Arteaga and Bingham. The first graders not only entertained but also educated their kindergarten audience. Bravo!
5th Grade Coding Club: Mighty Minds Unite! In the 5th Grade Coding Club, students power up their creativity and problem-solving skills to tackle exciting tech challenges! Together, they use their Mighty Minds to Get Smart, designing cool projects and learning the secrets of coding. But it’s not all smooth sailing—Dr. Distractor lurks in the shadows, tempting them with distractions at every turn. Can the club stay focused and outsmart him? Join the adventure, level up your skills, and help your team defeat distractions, one line of code at a time!
On Friday, December 13, McVey’s fourth graders celebrated Medieval Day! Students rotated through classrooms to enjoy engaging medieval-themed activities, including making medieval stew, creating stained glass windows, and more. Many students embraced the spirit of the day by dressing up as knights, queens, and other characters from the era. This special event complements their studies on Medieval times, giving them a hands-on opportunity to experience life during that period. A huge thank you to the fourth-grade teachers for organizing an unforgettable day for the students!

Mighty Minds in the Third Grade performed a Readers Theater about Susan B. Anthony, highlighting her tireless advocacy for women's rights and suffrage. Through expressive voices and dramatic gestures, they highlighted key moments in Susan B. Anthony’s life, such as her bold speeches and activism in the fight for equality.
Fifth Graders Get Smart at the Nassau County Museum of Art! McVey’s fifth graders recently embarked on an exciting educational adventure to the Nassau County Museum of Art to explore Seeing Red: Renoir to Warhol. This captivating exhibition delves into the many meanings and powerful emotions evoked by the color red in art. Students learned how red has symbolized love, authority, energy, and beauty throughout history. Featuring over 70 works by renowned artists the exhibition offered a vibrant journey through art’s past and present. It was a fun and inspiring day, sparking curiosity and creativity in our young learners!
The Pre-K classes at McVey Elementary brought the Thanksgiving spirit to life with a delightful Balloon Float Parade! Tiny hands worked together to craft colorful, imaginative balloon floats, showcasing creativity and teamwork. Proudly parading through the halls, the Pre-K students shared their festive creations with classmates, spreading kindness and joy. This heartwarming event highlighted the power of community and the magic of the holiday season, leaving everyone with a little extra gratitude in their hearts.
First Graders Exploring Ancient Egypt: A Journey Through Time
What better way for first graders to explore Ancient Egypt than by turning their own hallway into a mini museum. First graders created exciting and interactive exhibits in their classrooms, allowing the past to come to life! These exhibits featured The Nile River, The Great Pyramid, The Sphinx, Hieroglyphics, Ancient Egyptian Jewelry, Pharaohs and their tombs. Take a look at their adventure!
Fourth Graders Explored the East Meadow Public Library!
Last week, our adventurous fourth graders took a field trip to the East Meadow Public Library, where they immersed themselves in the exciting world of books during a fun-filled "genre tasting." They sampled stories from all kinds of genres, sparking their imaginations and inspiring new favorite reads.
The highlight? Each student received their very own library card, unlocking a world of learning and discovery. With the library as their new resource, they’re ready to Get Smart and explore knowledge like never before. Here's to a lifetime of reading adventures!

The fifth graders from McVey Elementary had an exciting learning experience at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, where they attended a performance of STOMP. This high-energy show, known for its creative use of everyday objects to make music, inspired the students to think about rhythm, teamwork, and creativity in new ways. The interactive and immersive experience left them feeling energized and more knowledgeable about the power of sound and collaboration. The trip was a fantastic blend of education and entertainment, making the arts a memorable part of their learning journey!
The 5th-grade field trip to Project Adventure was a hit! The students spent the day playing teamwork games and working together on challenges that built trust and cooperation. They practiced problem-solving and communication in fun, hands-on activities. Teachers noticed how Mighty Kind the students were, with classmates cheering each other on and helping out. By the end of the day, the students felt more connected and confident, ready to bring their new skills back to the classroom.
McVey Elementary hosted a "Mighty Mind Pink Out" event to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Students, teachers, and staff were encouraged to wear pink to school to show their support for those affected by breast cancer. It was a wonderful way for even the youngest students to make a difference and show their support for a meaningful cause.
Unity Day at McVey Elementary was a vibrant celebration of kindness and togetherness! The talented publicity club played a key role in promoting the event, creating eye-catching posters that decorated the school and encouraged everyone to wear orange. As the day unfolded, the halls were filled with bright orange attire, symbolizing our commitment to inclusivity. The publicity club even documented the day with photos, showcasing smiles and friendships, ensuring the message of togetherness resonated long after the celebration ended!
The Get Smart Show Mighty Minds of the Week! Students use their Mighty Minds to Get Smart by challenging themselves with fun activities that help them think and solve problems. This simple yet meaningful routine sets a positive tone for the day, reminding students of their responsibility to their school, country, and one another as they embark on another day of learning and growth.

Welcome to the eighth installment of Mighty Minds of McVey! Our first guests were Emma, Naomi, and Alexa. These girls created a wonderful project all about cotton candy! They shared some SWEET facts about this delicious treat, and decorated their project with the classic colors of cotton candy: pink and blue! We felt ourselves getting cavities just by looking at this delectable project. Our next guest was Dylan. Dylan created a line-graph project in which he graphed the temperatures of Lisbon, Portugal over the course of one week. It was awesome to see Dylan put the skills he is learning about in the classroom to use on this project. It is doubly cool that he did the project on the capital city of his home country! Great job, Dylan! Our next guest was Elson. Elson did a project in which he taught us about chimpanzees. He described what they look like, how they move, and how they convey emotions! This project was CHIMPLY incredible! Our final guests were Dylan and Thiago. These students created a project in which they compared saltwater and freshwater crocodiles. Not only was their information very interesting, their illustrations really tied this whole project together. This project really rocked our crocs off!
