Bowling Green Students

Students and teachers throughout the East Meadow School District participated in several activities to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Mrs. Giglio's fourth grade class at Bowling Green Elementary School class spent several weeks learning about the Lunar New Year. Red is a color that symbolizes luck, which is why the students chose to wear red during their New Year celebration. They read several books and even learned how to write in Chinese. Mrs. Giglio's students made a red banner with a goal for the New Year in Chinese. Her students also created colorful dragons based on their interpretations of the famous Lion Dance.

First graders in Ms. Tillwitz’s class at Parkway Elementary School wore red, read books about the Lunar New Year and made their own paper dragons. Additionally, students who celebrate the Lunar New Year taught their fellow classmates about the annual traditions.

Meadowbrook Elementary School’s third graders eagerly learned about various Chinese customs in celebration of the holiday. Students participated in several activities which included creating Chinese lanterns. The lantern is the traditional lighting tool of China which symbolizes happiness and good luck during the Lunar New Year. Third graders painted cherry blossoms on paper, which they then carefully cut into the lanterns. Students also played the ancient Chinese puzzle game, tangrams. After cutting the required seven puzzle pieces, students had a lot of fun arranging them into various animals.

Third grade teachers Mrs. Balsamo, Mrs. Coates, Mrs. Felder and Mrs. Pawluk proudly displayed the work of their students to share information about Chinese culture in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit.
